Unable to Access Your Website, Email or cPanel (Firstserv Guide)

If you’re experiencing issues such as:

  • Your website not loading or timing out
  • Unable to access cPanel or webmail
  • Email clients failing to send or receive messages

…it’s likely that your IP address has been temporarily blocked by the server firewall.

Why Does This Happen?

To protect Firstserv hosting from abuse and malicious activity, the firewall may block IP addresses that trigger certain rules—usually due to repeated failed requests or suspicious behaviour.

How to Unblock Your IP Address

You can quickly check and remove a block via your Firstserv Client Area.

Steps:

  1. Log in to your Firstserv Client Area
  2. Navigate to:
    • Services → My Services (or use the shortcut)
  3. Click Manage Product next to your hosting plan
  4. Locate the Check Firewall section

What You’ll See

  • Your current IP address status is displayed automatically
  • Click Check Firewall to refresh the status

✅ If your IP is blocked, this tool will attempt to unblock it

Checking Another IP

You can also check a different IP address (e.g. for a colleague or developer).

  • Find your IP using an online “What is my IP” tool
  • Enter it in the firewall checker if needed

Why Was My IP Blocked?

Common causes include:

  • Entering incorrect login details multiple times (cPanel, FTP, webmail)
  • Email clients using incorrect credentials (e.g. Outlook, mobile apps)
  • Repeated failed login attempts on password-protected pages
  • Excessive email checking (e.g. polling POP3 too frequently)
  • Triggering security rules (e.g. ModSecurity protection)

Blocking Duration

  • Blocks are usually temporary (around 20 minutes)
  • Repeated triggers (3+ times in 24 hours) may result in a longer or permanent block

Other Causes of Access Issues (403 Errors)

Not all access issues are firewall-related. A 403 Forbidden error may indicate other problems:

1. Missing Index File

If your site shows a 403 error:

  • You may not have an index file (e.g. index.php, index.html) in /public_html

✅ Ensure your main site file is in place.

2. Incorrect File Permissions

Incorrect permissions can prevent access to your site.

  • Files should typically be 644
  • Directories should be 755

✅ Review and correct permissions if needed.

3. ModSecurity Blocking Requests

If you’ve recently:

  • Installed new plugins, scripts, or modules
  • Made changes to your site

…it’s possible a request triggered a ModSecurity rule, which may block access temporarily.

What to Do

If you suspect ModSecurity is the cause:

  • Contact support with:
    • The URL you were accessing
    • Approximate time of the issue
    • Your public IP address

✅ This helps identify and resolve any false positives.

Summary

If you can’t access your site or email services:

  1. ✅ Check if your IP is blocked via the client area
  2. ✅ Use the firewall tool to unblock
  3. ✅ Review login credentials across all devices
  4. ✅ Check for other issues like permissions or missing files

If you’re unable to resolve the issue or need further assistance, the Firstserv support team is always available to help investigate.
